Alexis, 26, is among Arsenal’s stand-out players so far this term and was declared a major doubt for Chile’s World Cup qualifier with Uruguay on Tuesday as a result of a calf injury. But the dazzling winger played the full 90 minutes for his country as they fell 3-0 to Uruguay in a spiky World Cup qualifier.
Nevertheless, the risk Chile boss Jorge Sampaoli took by fielding Alexis could backfire as the player could struggle to be fit for the trip to the Hawthorns after a long journey back to London from Montevideo.
Alexis has been in sparkling form for Arsenal once again this season, bagging 10 goals in 20 appearances for both club and country – with all of those goals coming within a six-match run including a hat-trick against Leicester in September.
The ex-Udinese and Barcelona attacker has been struggling with the injury since playing the full 90 minutes in Chile’s 1-1 draw with Colombia last Thursday.
Chile boss Sampaoli said, ahead of last night’s defeat to Uruguay: “Alexis has a pain in his calf and we will wait for him until the last minute to see if he is ready to play.”
As well as their crucial clash with West brom, Arsenal have a must-win Champions League encounter against Dinamo Zagreb to prepare for on Tuesday and, they will need Alexis to be fully fit for the game.
The Gunners need to win the match in order to keep alive their hopes of progressing to the next stage of Europe’s elite competition.
