With many calling for the head of Mourinho following Chelsea’s poor form, one of the club’s legends and former player, Gianfranco Zola believes the pair of Diego Costa and Eden Hazard, who were amongst the best players of the team all across England last season are one of the reasons why Chelsea has slumped. But both haven’t been able to reproduce their form of last season, with Costa finding the back of the net just thrice across all competitions, while Hazard is yet to register a single goal this season.
Zola also points to the team’s defensive deficiencies as one of the causes for the unexplainable poor form of Chelsea. Mourinho is under pressure after the club lost their 7th League game last weekend, and currently now sit on 16th position. Their chances of defending the League Cup have been ruled out by Stoke City when they got eliminated few weeks ago. The team have been poor both in attack and defense, with them having conceded more than 16 other clubs, while their forward trio have only 3 games in-between them this season. Zola, who is also lined up for an interim job at the club says,
“There is no one compelling reason for the poor start to the season. The poor form of key offensive players Eden Hazard and Diego Costa has not helped. Defensively as well the team dropped the standards set last year. So the players have lost confidence as a group and this has led to poor results.”
The club owner is also considering replacing the coach if the results don’t change even if he had earlier given his word to support the Portuguese. But with Chelsea starring at missing out on Champions League qualification for next season after being 13 points behind the last qualifying spot and bound to lose 40 million Pounds if they don’t qualify, a change in the dugout might occur. The team face Norwich after the international break having gone into it with just 3 points above the relegation zone. Zola also believes they can come out of the mess after the break,
“The club has it in them to turn around their fortunes.”
