According to El Confidencial, the deal involving the move of Saul Niguez from Atletico Madrid to Arsenal was almost signed and sealed and the midfielder would have moved to the Emirate stadium this January, but injury to another Atletico Madrid midfielder, Tiago, brought an abrupt end to the deal.
Super-agent Jorge Mendes was said to be the one in charge of the deal, and the Portuguese agent has almost concluded the deal before Atletico Madrid put a stop to the deal as they need a replacement for the injured Tiago. Since the injury of Tiago, Saul Niguez has started the 3 games Atletico Madrid played as the holding midfielder and he functioned very well in this role.
The midfielder is actually needed by Arsenal as they look to strengthen their team in a bid to win the Premier league for the first time in 11 years. The Spanish international would have comfortably played either as a defensive or central midfielder for Arsenal. Arsenal need reinforcement in this area as Francis Coquelin and Santi Cazorla are regularly injured while Mikel Arteta and Mattieu Flamini are aging already.
The 21-year old Spaniard joined Atletico Madrid youth team as a teenager in 2008 from Real Madrid and he was promoted to the first team of Atletico Madrid in 2012 after playing for Atletico Madrid B for 2 years. He has since played 35 games for the Spanish giant and was loaned to Rayo Vallecano during the 2013/2014 season where he played 35 times.
