He was tagged the “new Fabregas” but he was impatient, he left Arsenal. Fast forward five years later, Fran Merida has come out in the open to state it was a mistake leaving Arsenal when he did in 2010. According to mirror, the Spaniard claims he was impatient and should have stayed at Arsenal.
I personally and I believe many other Arsenal fans out there had high hopes for Merida when he joined the Gunners as a 15 year old youngster. Wenger in particular described him as an “absolutely amazing player”. Due to the presence of the player he was likened to, Cesc Fabegas, in the first team, Merida played mainly on loan or with the youth teams and became impatient after wards due to his lack of first team action.
He left Arsenal for Atletico Madrid and ever since, his career has nosedived. He is now playing in the second division of the Spaniard league. Talking to Yahoo sports, Merida was quoted to have said;
“It was a mistake, I wasn’t patient,” he said.
“I realise that now, but Ive never been a patient person.
“I had some opportunities but the competition was high. Arsenal bought Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere into the first-team. [Samir] Nasri, [Cesc] Fabregas, [Tomas] Rosicky and Denilson were also in my position. It was difficult for me.”
It is a shame the way Merida’s career has gone under, however, I personally hope other Arsenal youngsters can take a lesson or two from his misguided move away from the club. The grass is simply not always greener on the other side. Ask Merida, ask Hleb, ask Adebayor
