Arsenal defeated Newcastle at the Emirates stadium to go top of the Premier league as Leicester faltered again, failing to get a win in their third straight match. They have also failed to score in their last 3. Today’s result leaves Arsenal 2 points clear off their closest rivals. Leicester City had a disappointing day as they failed to defeat newcomers Bournemouth at home giving Arsenal a shot at the top.
Although, the victory was never an easy one, as the Gunners endured a goalless first half from a resilient Newcastle defence. Arsenal had to wait until the 72nd minute before finally breaking the deadlock from a corner, through center back, Laurent Koscielny after some beautiful work from Oliver Giroud.
Arsenal started with Metersacker and Koscielny in the center back positions, Flamini also starting in midfield as expected, while Ozil, Walcott and Chamberlain occupied the attacking midfield positions behind Olivier Giroud.
The defeats leaves Steve McLaren under intense pressure as his side dropped into the relegation zone. Newcastle have only been able to gather 17 points from 20 games so far. Arsenal never totally dominated as Newcastle gave accounts of their qualities as well, registering a total of 11 shots, same number as Arsenal.
Arsenal goalie, Petr Cech also set a new premier league record of 170 clean sheets, surpassing David James record. Cech was on top form as he produced some excellent performance to deny Georginio Wijnaldum on three different occasions. Newcastle played with confidence all through, making life difficult for Arsenal until the Gunners fired in the winning goal.
Newcastle’s winless streak extends into four, but their performance contradicted their bottom three position. Hopefully, Steve McLaren’s side will take plenty of positives from the match while Arsenal celebrates being 2 points clear.
