Liverpool officials are reportedly in private talks with Borrussia Dortmund to strike a deal for Germany center back, Matts Hummel. The defender who is currently on a £197000 a week deal at Dortmund was part of the team under Jurgen Klopp at Dortmund. Klopp has previously affirmed that there will be new signings in January as the club intends to push for a top four finish this year.
Reports from Britain claims Klopp is on the move to raid Dortmund for his former star center back. The 27-year old was an integral part of the team that won successive league titles under Klopp and also lost the Champions league title to bitter rivals, Bayern Munich. Klopp seeks to be re-united with his former powerful center back at Dortmund.
Hummels has always impressed fans with his stunning and breathtaking performances. His great defending skills sparked serious interests from Manchester United all through last season. Hummels have scored 17 goals in 178 league appearances for Borrussia Dortmund. He was also heavily linked with a move to Barcelona.
According to reports from Britain, Hummel is the major transfer target for Liverpool in the January transfer window. The reports also claims that Liverpool are set to launch a huge bid for the center back. Liverpool are currently on 30 points from 20 games and their 2-0 loss earlier in the day at Westham has signified the need for top class defensive options if they are to sustain their top 4 push this season.
Liverpool have lost two of their last four league games, conceding 5 goals in the process and scoring just two, few of the stats that highlights Liverpool’s defensive problems. Liverpool have conceded 24 league goals this season, second highest among teams in the league’s top 10, just a goal behind Leicester who have conceded 25 times in the league so far.
The 27-year old has made 16 appearances in the German Bundesliga this season. He has also featured in the Europa League 5 times. Hummel has won 26 tackles this season with a success rate of 60 percent. He has made 35 interceptions, 52 clearances and two blocks. He averages 6 defensive action per game and have made just 2 defensive errors all season. His average won duels stands at 69 percent all season. Hummels will obviously be a good bargain for Liverpool at a time when the team has overly found it difficult to keep clean sheets.
