Manchester United Was Confident Of Signing Sergio Ramos

Sky Sports La Liga expert Guillem Balague, in an exclusive interview with talkSPORT, has revealed that Manchester United thought they could sign Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos in the summer.

Balague said the Red Devils entered into negotiations with Real for Ramos, but the Spain international defender opted to ink a fresh five-year contract at the Spanish Capital.

The pundit claims he was not surprise the centre-back turned Manchester United down, but believes the Old Trafford top brass thought they could lure the former Sevilla defender to the English Premier League, as per the report.

“There were negotiations taking place,” the Spanish footballer enthusiast said.

“Manchester United believed they could have him. But I was convinced. Someone who dreamt of being the captain of Real Madrid, who was being made the captain of Real Madrid, just wanted a bigger contract.”

United ended up not signing any defender in the summer, however, Chris Smalling, has been in incredible form, marshalling the Red Devils’ defence alongside Daley Blind.

Meanwhile, Balague does believe there is a possibility of Man United signing Barcelona superstar Neymar Jr.

“Neymar is a completely different situation, believe me, and is actually thinking ‘what shall I do next?’ because (Lionel) Messi will be there for four or five years if he doesn’t move and Neymar won’t be allowed to grow.”

United travel to South London to face Alan Pardew’s Crystal Palace later today, and Louis van Gaal’s boys will be hoping to defeat the Eagles at Selhurst Park so as to remain within touching distance of league leaders Manchester City.
