Italian news outlet Calciomercato have chipped in with a claim that Manchester United held talks with super-agent Mino Raiola about signing AC Milan shot-stopper Gianluigi Donnarumma before the Italian signed a professional deal.
Donnarumma made his Serie A debut on Sunday as he started against Sassuolo, making him the youngest player ever to start a top flight Italian league game, as per the Daily Mail.
However, the claim from Calciomercato is that prior to the 16-year old penning a professional deal with the Serie A giants, the Red Devils were keen to lure him to Old Trafford.
Louis van Gaal’s side reportedly held talks with Donnarumma’s agent Raiola – who also handles the affairs of other top players like Paul Pogba, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Mario Balotelli amongst others – about signing the goalie as the twenty-time Premier League champions were impressed by him.
The Italian source goes further to say talks were made possible due to van Gaal’s close relationship with Raiola, especially as the two worked together to bring Sergio Romero to Old Trafford in the summer.
Although Donnarumma failed to keep a clean sheet on his professional debut – with Domenico Berardi’s free kick going past him into the net, the 16-year old impressed and will be glad with Milan’s 2-1 win.
Meanwhile, United also battled to a 0-0 draw at home against Manchester City in the Manchester derby on Sunday and, the Mancunian Reds now sit in fourth position level on points with West Ham United, and two adrift of league leaders – the Citizens.
