The Manchester derby between Louis van Gaal’s Man United and Manuel Pellegrini’s in-form City is without mincing words, one of the biggest fixtures in the Premier League and both sides are heading into the game in good form.
The Citizens trounced Bournemouth 5-1 in their last outing in the Premier League with Raheem Sterlin bagging a hat-trick – his first ever in the English top flight. The Mancunian Reds, on the other hand, brushed aside Everton 3-0 at Goodison Park on the same day.
Now we examine who should feature in United’s starting XI against City.
England and Manchester United skipper Wayne Rooney will start in the derby, if not for anything, but the fact he is the top scorer in Manchester derbies. That would mean Anthony Martial could be handed a start from the left wing once again and the French teenager will pose a threat from that position as he has done in the past two games.
The other main focus in the encounter – which promises to be full of intrigues – is Ander Herrera in the number 10 role. The Spanish whiz is going to be crucial in this game due to his creative abilities. The former Athletic Bilbao ace was involved in United’s equalising goal against CSKA Moscow in Russia, but with Juan Mata likely to return for the game against Pellegrini’s side next Sunday.
Here is how what we think will be United’s strongest starting eleven versus Man City:
De Gea; Darmian, Smalling, Jones, Rojo; Scheiderlin, Carrick, Mata, Herrera, Martial; Rooney.
