Chelsea manager José Mourinho is keen to bring in some quality additions to his underwhelming squad in January and, the club owner Roman Abramovich has decided to spend big on a club overhaul following the Blues’ stuttering start to the campaign.
The Blues have been dismal so far this term, losing seven of their 12 Premier League games and leaking in 23 goals in thee process. The west London club are expected to be the most active of all top clubs in the English top flight in January and one of those players the Blues have been linked with is Antonio Candreva of Lazio.
Candreva, 28, has caught the eye with his brilliant skills and blistering pace and, Italian news outlet Tuttomercatoweb claim Abramovich has made a personal call to Lazio as he attempts to complete a move for Candreva and, the Italian attacker is also keen to quit the Stadio Olimpico next summer.
Capped 33 times by Italy, Candreva was linked with a summer move to the Premier League – with Liverpool and Chelsea eager to sign him – but he signed a new contract with Lazio in September.
“I’ve always wanted to stay at Lazio,” Candreva stated.
“That’s what I said to my agents before all these rumours.
“‘It’s true that several teams came in for me but I always wanted to re-sign with Lazio.”
Should Candreva finally sign for Chelsea, the former Udinese winger will have to compete with the likes of Eden Hazard and Pedro for a starting place in Jose Mourinho’s team. Both Hazard and Pedro have underperformed so far this term and, the arrival of Candreva could make them rediscover form.
Candreva has represented Lazio 129 times in the Serie A, bagging 31 goals having joined the Biancocelesti in 2012. According to the reports, the Blues are ready to offer the Italian as much as £95,000 a week wage package in order ot convince him to join the club.
