Though Louis van Gaal remains coach of Manchester United, no managerial position appears more vacant in England than his. Chelsea have Guus Hiddink in charge of affairs at the moment and are looking for a permanent coach, Pellegrini’s stay at Manchester City is also under question with the Chilean not in the least worried. However, Old Trafford seems to be where all the speculations and rumours of a fire and hire decision are cooking.
The Red devils just about ended an eight-match winless run on Saturday with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Swansea. United were also unceremoniously dumped out of the Champions league and the Capital One cup competitions. A top four finish is also in the balance in the Premier league and there seems to be the need for a change in management.
Several names have made the rounds as the likely successor of van Gaal but the most notable four are Pep Guardiola, Jose Mourinho, Diego Simeone, and Ryan Giggs. Though it remains uncertain yet, the first two are believed to be in pole position for the job. However, the Sun claims Manchester United’s squad are rooting for Simeone. Paul Jiggins quoted his source as saying, “All the betting may be on Mourinho coming in but the talk among the players is all about Simeone”.
The 45-year-old has done a great job at Atletico Madrid. He has transformed the club to one of the most formidable and consistent performers in Spain keeping up with the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona (who are more financially buoyant) even after selling club stars like Diego Costa, Felipe Luis, and Radamel Falcao. He guided Atletico to its first La Liga title in almost 20 years and a spot in the Champions league final.
Daily Telegraph’s Jason Burt expects to see Simeone in the Premier league next season. According to him,
“I would be very surprised if Simeone and Guardiola are not both in the Premier League next season”. The Argentine has also been strongly linked to the job at Chelsea but has denied such rumours.
