Louis van Gaal’s Manchester United welcome West Bromwich Albion to Old Trafford today in a Premier League game the Red Devils will hope to win in order to boost their chance of securing the title this term.
The Mancunian Reds are clearly in a title race with Manchester City and Arsenal and any slip-up could derail their season and van Gaal’s – with reports the Dutchman could get the sack if he fails to secure any silverware for the club.
Therefore, van Gaal will certainly field his strongest line-up for the game as United seek to return to glory days.
David de Gea will start between the sticks for United as he is the club’s safest hands. With Albion’s striker Salomon Rondon is fine form at the moment, de Gea will have to put in another impressive display in order to secure the result for the Red Devils.
Matteo Darmian should start from the right-back and will have a lot of work to do in order to nullify the threats of Saido Berahino. The centre-back partnership of Chris Smalling and Daley Blind have been impressive so far this term and should assume duties today once again. Marcos Rojo will likely retain his place at left-back too, having performed admirably in the absence of the injured Luke Shaw.
The Red Devils midfield should have, as first on the list, Morgan Schneiderlin, while the likes of Bastian Schweinsteiger, Juan Mata, Ander Herrera and Anthony Martial should also feature from the start.
Herrera was a late minute substitute against CSKA Moscow last Tuesday and should start behind the striker. Mata and Martial should assume duties from either wings and will aid the team in clinching the needed points.
Despite his struggles this term, Wayne Rooney will likely get the nod to lead the attack for van Gaal’s men once again. The England and Man United captain has been a far cry from what he used to be, although he bagged the goal the secured the win over CSKA at the midweek. Rooney will have to be at his utmost best against the Westbrom defenders later today.
