Liverpool are involved in advanced negotiations to bring Schalke 04 defender, Joel Matip to England. Jurgen Klopp is desperate to add defensive reinforcements to his Liverpool side as his defensive resources are depleting. Their best defender, Slovakian Martin Skrtel is currently out for what the manager hopes will only be six weeks, Dejan Lovren is injured, though is due to return in the coming days, Mamadou Sakho only just returned from injury and Ivorian, Kolo Toure is no longer at the level required at a club of Liverpool’s stature.
Matip, who is a product of the Gelsenkirchen club’s youth system after moving to the club at age 9 from VfL Bochum is primarily a central defender who is also comfortable playing in midfield, sitting in front of the defence as a defensive midfielder.
The 24-year-old, six feet plus defender was born in Germany to a German mother and Cameroonian Father and chose to represent Cameroon at international level in 2010 after he was convinced by his cousin and former Cameroonian international, Joseph Desire Job who had a spell with Middlesbrough, then in the premiership, in the early to mid-noughties. He currently has 27 caps to his name. He has made 17 appearances for Schalke in the league this season, scoring two goals.
