Chelsea moved up to the 11th position on the table after defeating Southampton with a late Branislav Ivanovic header. Southampton was unbeaten for the last 6 games, and won 5 out of those but Chelsea broke their unbeaten run with a second goal at the 89th minute.
Southampton’s keeper Fraser Forster set record of reaching 667 minutes of top-flight football without conceding a goal. The home side started off strong as Shane Long scored, taking full advantage of Chelsea’s defensive error. The 42nd minute strike seemed like it would be the decisive goal for Southampton, but soon Chelsea proved that they were the more consistent and stronger side.
In the 75th minute, it seemed like Southampton’s backline fell asleep. Cesc Fabregas leveled the score as Forster was beaten after 708 minutes. But this was not it, Chelsea didn’t just stop there. Ivanovic’s powerful header to Willian’s corner completed the dramatic match with only one minute remaining on the clock.
Southampton clearly had a better first half but could not reciprocate their performance after the half time. Chelsea manager Hiddick said, “I think it was a deserved win for us. They haven’t conceded in the last six, seven games so it was successful for us.”
Southampton is still above Chelsea on the table with 40 points at 7th position while Chelsea stands at 11th with 36 points. Chelsea needed these three points to improve their position, and managed to do exactly that.
