Group C Analysis & Preview:
All eyes are on Group C for one of the most anticipated clashes of the World Cup round robin stage when England and the USA meet June 12 in Rustenburg. England and USA may be the two heavy favorites, but they will still have to contend with upset-minded Slovenia and Algeria.

The DailyFootballBlog.com experts break it down:

Greg Neville: England and the US get things under way in Group C – ‘C’ for cruisy. The potential of LA Galaxy teammates David Beckham and Landon Donovan going head-to-head adds intrigue to this match – they don’t even like each other when they wear the same shirt. England and US advance.

Ron Patel: Fabio Capello couldn’t have got a better draw. The Three Lions will cruise, with no clear favorite for second. The U.S. showed the world it can play at the Confederations Cup, Algeria held its nerve to outdo Egypt in qualifying, and tiny Slovenia upset Russia in the playoffs. England and Slovenia it is.

Alex Michaels: A sweet draw for England, although nerves will play a crucial part in the opening match. The U.S. will be keen to impress and show their Confederations Cup form was not a fluke, but expectations could get the better of them this time. Still, I can’t see anything other than those two going through, with England topping the group.

Peter Howard: Lots of talk about how good this draw is for England, but this might be the best possible draw for the US side as well. The USA showed some mettle in South Africa this past summer, and should come out very motivated to face England in the opening match. If the US and the English do not advance it would be a stunning upset.

Up for review tomorrow is Group D.

  1. I think England will win Group C with ease. A win against USA and Algeria should be well within the grasp of Capello’s men meaning they may be able to rest players for the match v Slovenia.

USA are probably the next best team in the group but can’t see them toppling England.

It will be interesting to see how England do in the knock-out stages under Capello as historically, this is where they come unstuck, usually on penalties.

Think everything is in place for England to have a good tournament and with a bit of luck, semi finals at least!

  2. Adam says:

If England ties or loses to USA and Slovania wins against Algeria, Slovenia will be playing extra hard against both USA and England. I think England and USA will advance, but Slovenia is going to be tough with 3 points after their first game…

  3. Fouad says:

I am sure Algeria will win against Slovania and they will play well enough against England as they have at least three players playing with the english speaking people…I am expecting Algeria to pass along with England.

  4. Tony says:

    Who on earth are Slovania?????

  5. Barry says:

people backing England are living in cloud cookoo land. They are not good enough, never were. They will all be crying into their beer by next week…….Sados

  6. Jan says:

regardless of the not so “high level” playing of both teams in todays match, i assume that nobody from Slovenia is crying today…..and Slovenia is a small country with only 2 mio. of its populos; northern Balkans, south from Austria.

    I agree that England and the USA are favourites for this group;

Favourites are England and USA, but I hope Slovenia will advance (I’m from Slovenia). After all, we beats Russia in qualifications and played very good against New Zeland (3:1-friendly) which beats Serbia (also friendly).

We also played against England and we lost 2:1 (Rooney dive for penalty :S )

    usa will go home
