I can hear the chants now – ‘Terry! Terry! Terry!’
Red Bull Arena, the new home for New York’s MLS franchise, will welcome Frenchman and former Arsenal striker Thierry Henry, who is playing his last season with Spanish giants Barcelona.
(With thick New York accent) ‘Let’s go Henry!’ will be the cry that brings the last-placed US league team out of the cellar if they manage to secure his services.
But while football fans worldwide would have taken note of the transfer rumours to the Big Apple or the interest from big-spending and overcrowded Manchester City, I wonder if your average New Yorker has even heard of the prolific scorer – Terry who?
Or if they even care at the moment … the Yankees are in their first baseball World Series since losing to the Florida Marlins in 2003.
A bigger name in football – David Beckham – has already attempted to lift the profile of the world game in the US to arguably mixed results. With Becks in LA and Henry in NYC, the MLS certainly will have their major markets covered.
The Galaxy midfielder is set to return to AC Milan on a loan deal in January to help secure his spot in the English squad to play in what would be his last World Cup.
Once WC10 in South Africa is over Becks and Posh can fully settle into their retirement plan with the kids in Beverley Hills.
And that’s what this is all about … Henry is becoming a step or two too slow for the Spanish La Liga and his management are looking into his retirement plan.
If only the Miami and Tampa Bay franchises didn’t go belly up – because Florida, I hear, is a great destination for retirees.
The media jobs must be drying up … although I can see Becks and Henry as co-hosts for a 2014 World Cup show – the network suits should work on that.
Now let’s play – “Where in the world is …? Add your comments and let us know some former greats that are on a good retirement plan.
Here’s mine … Liverpool legend Robbie “God” Fowler is playing Down Under for the North Queensland Fury. The A-League franchise, in their first year of the competition, is based in Townsville – in the north-east of Australia. A long way for a Liverpool lad but the weather is beautiful.

Nice article, bro! Here’s mine…Where is the Bulgarian pitbull – Hristo Stoichkov? Always one of my favorite lefties and a 1994 WC hero, “Dagger” now lives and coaches football in beautiful Pretoria, South Africa.
hehe good post!
