Real Salt Lake Wins Penalty Kick Battle to Reach MLS Cup

Real Salt Lake was the last team into the MLS Cup Playoffs, and might be the last team standing after advancing MLS Cup in Seattle when a scoreless match was decided 5-4 on penalty kicks over the Chicago Fire on Saturday.

RSL will take on the Los Angeles Galaxy on Nov. 22 at Qwest Field for the MLS title. This season the Galaxy earned a 2-2 draw with Salt Lake at Rio Tinto, but RSL was a 2-0 winner in Los Angeles.

The Eastern Conference Final Saturday in Chicago was a well played affair. Both teams had chances in regulation and extra time, but neither side could convert.

Both goalkeepers played well in the contest, with Chicago’s Jon Busch registering eight saves and RSL’s Nick Rimando stopping six shots.

John Thorington also made a big save for the Fire, clearing the ball off the line in stoppage time on a Robbie Findley shot off an RSL corner kick.

Rimando stepped up when it came to the penalty kicks. After the opening five shots, it was level at 4-all. Rimando made two consecutive saves, setting the stage for Ned Grabavoy to net the ball that would send RSL to the championship match.

There is already significant buzz building about MLS Cup with David Beckham’s Galaxy reaching the final match. On Saturday, one day after the Galaxy clinched the spot in the match, 6,000 additional seats that were initially going to be covered were put on sale in Qwest Field.
